5th Grade Dreams

Since 2018, I have been documenting the adult lives of my fifth-grade classmates. As children, we were labeled as “academically gifted” students, and we were relocated to a program designed to elevate the school district’s academic standing. Over the years, I’ve used point-and-shoot film cameras to capture my classmates living their everyday lives in varying contexts.

‘5th Grade Dreams' began as a subconscious exploration of identity and memory. Now, in our 30s, I’m interested in how our adolescent experiences shape our past, present, and future identities.

I’m asking: How have we carried our childhood identities into adulthood? How can images convey the deep-seated psychic connection between past and future?
